Daydreams of the Poor and Beautiful

I wanna be famous and beautiful
so I can be humble about being famous and beautiful
I wanna be famous and beautiful
so I can be humble about being famous and beautiful
I wanna ride to the Grammy's in my '87Nissan pickup
with a dent in the hood.
I wanna step on the carpet, tell all the reporters
it's the little things in life that make me feel good.

Because I wanna be distant and beautiful.
so I can be wanted by everyone, but no one will have me.
and when you ask me if I love you , I'll just look away at the sky
so you can see just how pretty the sun looks in my eyes.
and i'll be free of everything
free of responsibility

I learned piano from Hiram.
If you gave him a sandwich, he would teach you.
And he could play stride piano like Thelonious.
And I read in a magazine that he used to be famous.
So I asked him what happened, and he said it didn't matter.
All that matters now, is what's happening now.
And his mother still lived in the projects
and she and I were pretty much the only two folks at his funeral.
He was free of everything
free of responsibllity

I wanna be poor and beautiful
so I can tell you I love you and look you in the eye
and you'll see that I mean it , cause you'll see I am honest
and wholesome and hard-working and upright and pure.
And my body wil be chiseled from hours of labor, bulilding the city
for pennies a day
and I will play my guitar for my family, community
and yeah, I will be a real hero that way.
I'll be free of everything
Free of responsibility
